“The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand.” Psalm 37:23-24 (NIV)
Good morning from beautiful Colorado! As usual, I’m sitting down this Saturday morning with all of us in mind. Today, I’m writing blog posts for next week. So come Monday, I will publicly share about a little misstep I had last week.
But before I share my “oops” moment, let me tell you what a “misstep” actually looks like to me. Imagine you’re walking down a narrow path. Suddenly, your foot catches on a root or an uneven stone. You lurch forward, your heart skips a beat, and for a second, you think you’re going down—but then, you catch yourself. You wobble, you regain your balance, and you keep going. That’s how I see our life choices.
Falling isn’t the goal; anytime we actually hit the ground, it hurts. Sometimes it hurts beyond our own ability to recover quickly. That’s why it’s such a blessing when we can keep both feet steady while we’re on the move.
But I’m here to be real with you: I’ve been stumbling all week long. I found myself trying to fix every single problem that crossed my path, completely forgetting to take care of me. I was pouring from an empty cup, trying to be everyone’s hero while my own spirit was running on fumes. Sigh.
I’ve realized that being a caring person is a beautiful calling, but it’s a heavy job if you don’t have boundaries. Without those “guardrails,” our kindness can lead us right into burnout. So today, let’s learn to be as kind to ourselves as we are to the world.
A Prayer for Balance
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the steady hand that catches us when we lose our footing. We confess that sometimes we try to carry the weight of the world, forgetting that only You are meant to hold it all. Help us to find the courage to set healthy boundaries and the wisdom to know that taking care of ourselves isn’t selfish—it’s stewardship. When we stumble under the pressure of trying to fix everything, remind us to look to You. Thank You for holding our hand and keeping us from falling headlong. Amen.
