Hey y’all! Welcome back to my week-long ballot breakdown. We are moving right along into Wednesday’s queue, focusing on measures that impact our families, our schools, and our kids. Next up on my desk is Proposition 135. For me, this is a hard, definite YES.
When I look at this measure, my decision comes down to common sense and human development. Let’s get real—most people don’t truly know who they are until they turn 31 years old! And even then, let’s be honest, we are all still trying to figure out who we are, what we want, and how we fit into this world.
Growing up is a long, complicated journey. Kids and teenagers are constantly changing, growing, and evolving emotionally and psychologically. They simply do not have the developmental maturity yet to make permanent, irreversible surgical alterations to their bodies that they might feel completely different about later in life.
This really hit home for me after watching a documentary about “Ladyboys” in the Philippines. One of the individuals interviewed shared a deeply painful truth: after having the gender surgery, he could no longer enjoy sex and deeply wished he had never gone through with it. That spoke volumes to me about the heavy, lifelong reality of these procedures.
When a person makes a permanent, life-altering choice that might not turn out as they hoped, they should be well beyond the legal age. They need considerable life experience under their belt first.
As a community, our job is to protect our children and give them the time and space to grow up before making permanent medical decisions. By voting yes, I believe we are drawing a safe, responsible line that pauses permanent medical modifications until an individual is an adult and mature enough to make that choice for themselves.
Don’t let the emotional campaign ads panic you into a reckless decision. Look past the commercials and do your homework!
