Hey y’all! Moving right along through our week-long look at this massive ballot. Next up on my desk is Amendment 86, which deals with congressional redistricting and how our state’s voting maps are drawn. For me, after weighing the long-term impact of changing our state constitution, this is a NO.
Right now, Colorado already has a system where an independent citizen commission draws our voting maps every 10 years. Amendment 86 wants to add a bunch of rigid, permanent rules to the constitution to restrict any off-cycle changes to those maps in the future.
While it’s wrapped up in a nice-sounding slogan about fairness, I don’t think we should be hardcoding these permanent, restrictive rules into our foundational laws. Forcing these rigid frameworks into the constitution limits the flexibility of future voters and changes the power dynamics of how our state handles election mapping.
I worry about the long-term caution of locking in rules that tie the hands of future voters for any year down the line. Let’s keep our election systems fair but flexible enough to handle the future without over-regulating our constitution.
Don’t let the commercial noise panic you into a reckless vote. Do your homework!
