Good morning from Colorado!
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.” — Psalm 121:1–2
As we begin our fifth and final week of October’s 15 Minutes with God, I think we need to stop for a moment and make something very clear.
This month, we’ve talked about fear. We’ve talked about ghosts and ghouls, storms, failure, voices from our past, circumstances that can scare us, and those moments when we don’t know what to do next.
But after everything we’ve discussed, I don’t want us to lose sight of the most important part of the story.
God is not a ghost. God is not a ghoul. God is God.
He isn’t some mysterious spirit wandering in the darkness that we have to figure out or fear. He isn’t something we should place in the same category as the things that frighten us simply because we cannot see Him.
God is the Alpha and the Omega. He is the beginning and the end. He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
He is the Creator.
And I’ve been thinking about something else. God didn’t create life because He was lonely.
Think about that.
God wasn’t sitting somewhere by Himself, needing company. He wasn’t incomplete and looking for creation to make Him whole.
He created because He chose to create.
He is the source of life.
The mountains I look at here in Colorado didn’t create themselves. The trees, flowers, animals, oceans, stars, and people didn’t simply decide one day to exist.
God created.
And He created life with purpose.
That changes the way I think about our question for this week: “Where does my help come from?”
When I look toward the mountains and ask that question, I’m not looking toward some unknown force or something I don’t understand.
I’m looking toward the Maker of heaven and earth.
The One who created everything I can see is also the One I can trust with the things I cannot see.
That’s a powerful thought when you’re afraid.
We’ve watched Peter step out of a boat, only to become frightened by the storm around him. We’ve talked about what happens when we let someone else’s words drown out God’s truth. We’ve looked at disappointment, failure, trying again, asking for help, and finally recognizing that we don’t have to know everything.
And perhaps all of those lessons have been leading us to this one realization:
We don’t have to understand everything to know who God is.
We don’t have to know what tomorrow holds.
We don’t have to understand why something happened.
We don’t have to know how the next chapter will unfold.
We don’t even have to have all the answers.
Because our help doesn’t come from having all the answers.
Our help comes from the Lord.
That doesn’t mean life will suddenly become easy. It doesn’t mean every question will be answered the way we want. It doesn’t mean we will never be afraid again.
It means that when fear shows up, we know where to turn.
And maybe that’s what October has really been trying to teach us.
Fear can make us look everywhere.
Faith teaches us where to look.
So today, before we ask God to fix, change, explain, or rescue us from something, let’s simply remember who He is.
He is not the thing we fear.
He is the God we trust.
He is the beginning and the end.
He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
He is the Creator of life.
And when we finally recognize where our help comes from, perhaps we can stop looking around for something to save us and start looking up toward the One who has been there all along.
My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
I’ll see you tomorrow for another 15 Minutes with God.
