Hello from Colorado, where the peaks are tall and my perspective is firmly set on the horizon of Eternity! Today is Thursday, August 13, 2026, and my faith is permanently secured in Christ Jesus!
We are nearing the end of our weekly journey looking at the anatomy of a soaring eagle. We’ve learned to set our wings, refuse the mud, and embrace the solitary flight. Today, we look at another beautiful lesson from the eagle: how it can use rising air currents to gain and maintain altitude without constantly exhausting itself. When you decide to live and think on a higher level, the goal isn’t to work yourself into the ground trying to stay above the chaos.
The goal is to stop flapping your wings and start gliding.
In the natural world, eagles can take advantage of thermal currents—rising columns of warm air that form under the right atmospheric conditions. Rather than relying solely on constant wingbeats to maintain altitude, an eagle can position its wings to take advantage of these rising currents and conserve energy while it gains elevation. The eagle still has to work, but it learns when to flap and when to allow the air beneath its wings to do some of the lifting.
Spiritually, so many of us are completely spent because we are trying to fight systemic control, toxic dynamics, and life’s sudden crises in our own human strength. We keep pushing, fixing, defending, explaining, controlling, and trying to hold everything together. Eventually, we become exhausted because we were never designed to carry everything by ourselves.
As an ever-growing student of theology, and someone who once pursued a Master of Divinity, I may not have completed the degree, but my hunger to understand the Word of God never ended. I still fiercely study Scripture, open my Bible to seek His face, and dig deeply into the Word to verify truth for myself. And the more I study, the more I understand that God never intended for us to sustain our spiritual lives through our own strength alone.
There comes a point when we have to stop flapping and start trusting.
When you shift your perspective and learn to rely on the Holy Spirit, you stop exhausting yourself trying to manufacture what only God can provide. You begin to recognize the spiritual “currents” God has already placed around you—His grace, His presence, His Word, His wisdom, and His unshakeable promises. When you anchor your faith in Him, you don’t have to fight every current that comes against you. You can learn to move with Him, trusting that His strength is greater than anything you are facing.
That doesn’t mean you become passive. It means you learn the difference between striving and surrender. There are times when God will require you to flap your wings, and there are times when He will teach you to spread them wide and trust Him to carry you. Wisdom is knowing the difference.
You don’t survive the storm because you are strong enough to control everything around you. You survive because your strength comes from the One who is greater than the storm. His grace is sufficient. His presence is steady. His promises are unshakeable.
So stop exhausting yourself trying to carry what God never asked you to carry.
Stop flapping. Start trusting. Let God’s strength carry you through the pressure.
The Takeaway for Us
- The Limit of Self-Effort: One recognizes that fighting spiritual battles with purely human strength will always lead to burnout. Flapping your wings in panic only accelerates your fall.
- Catching the Divine Wind: One learns to actively search for and rest in God’s presence during a crisis. True spiritual victory comes from locking your faith into His rising power.
- Effortless Elevation: A believer understands that resting in Christ is not passive laziness; it is a high-level operational paradigm where God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness.
