October 1, 2026
Good morning from Colorado! Well, here we are—October has arrived, and you already know what that means. The pumpkins are coming out, the ghosts and ghouls are appearing, scary movies are finding their way onto our televisions, and before long somebody will be knocking on the door asking for candy. But before we spend the month talking about what scares us, I thought it would be fun to tell you where some of this thinking started for me.
My dad was from Florida, and he believed in what he called “voodoo.” My mom was born and raised in Louisiana, and she believed in it too. Now here’s the funny part: neither of my grandparents—on either side of the family—believed in voodoo. They were Christians, and their confidence was in the power of God and the Holy Trinity.
My parents, however, saw things a little differently. And my mom had an interesting way of putting it. She believed my dad’s “voodoo” was stronger than hers. Now ain’t that funny?
But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that underneath the stories we tell about ghosts, spirits, voodoo, darkness, and things we cannot explain is a much bigger question:
What are we really afraid of?
Are we afraid of ghosts and ghouls, or are we really afraid of the things we cannot see, cannot control, and cannot understand?
So that’s where we’re going this month.
Beginning tomorrow, our 15 Minutes with God will take us into the Gospels as we look at fear from a different perspective. We’ll talk about the things that frighten us, the things we believe, the things we don’t understand, and what happens when faith meets fear.
Because maybe the greatest question isn’t, “What is out there?”
Maybe it’s, “Who is with me when I’m afraid?”
So grab your coffee, your Bible, and maybe leave the light on. October is going to be an interesting month.
And I’ll see you tomorrow.
