Good morning from Colorado! Today is September 30, and we are closing out the month with our final mini Bible study for September. Over the past few days, we’ve talked about what we do with what God has placed in our hands and the importance of slowing down long enough to sit with Him. Today, I want us to look at another question that can make us uncomfortable: What happens when God asks us to do something we don’t feel ready or qualified to do?
Let’s Read the Scripture
Exodus 3:1–12 — Moses and the Burning Bush
Moses was tending sheep when he noticed something unusual: a bush was burning but wasn’t being consumed. When he approached it, God called his name and told him that He had heard the cries of His people and was sending Moses to Pharaoh to bring the Israelites out of Egypt.
Moses didn’t respond with excitement.
He responded with questions.
“Who am I?”
“What if they don’t believe me?”
“What if they ask who sent me?”
And eventually, Moses essentially asked God to send someone else.
I find that conversation fascinating because God wasn’t asking Moses whether he felt qualified. God was telling Moses what He was going to do through him.
There’s a difference.
How often do we look at an assignment and immediately start listing everything we don’t have? We don’t have enough experience. We don’t know enough people. We aren’t educated enough. We aren’t confident enough. We aren’t prepared enough.
Sometimes we may even be right.
We may genuinely lack something we believe we need.
But what if God isn’t asking us to accomplish something entirely by ourselves?
When Moses asked, “Who am I?”, God’s answer wasn’t a résumé of Moses’ qualifications. God simply told him, “Certainly I will be with thee.”
That changes the conversation.
Perhaps the question isn’t always whether we’re qualified.
Perhaps the question is whether we’re willing to trust the One who called us.
Questions to Consider
1. Is there something God may be asking me to do that I keep avoiding because I don’t feel qualified?
Be honest. What keeps coming to mind that you’ve repeatedly pushed aside?
2. What excuse do I keep giving myself?
Is it fear? Lack of experience? Money? Time? Age? Education? Confidence? Something else?
3. Am I focusing more on what I lack than on who God is?
Moses looked at himself and saw limitations. God was asking him to look beyond himself.
4. What would change if I believed God would be with me while I did it?
You don’t have to pretend you aren’t afraid. Consider what might happen if fear didn’t get the final word.
5. What is one small step I could take instead of waiting until I feel completely ready?
Maybe you don’t need to understand the entire journey. Maybe you only need enough courage to take the next step.
The Lesson
I don’t think Moses was wrong to recognize his limitations. In fact, knowing our limitations can be healthy. The problem comes when we allow our limitations to become the final decision.
God already knew who Moses was.
He knew his history. He knew his fears. He knew his weaknesses. He knew exactly who He was calling.
And He called him anyway.
That gives me something to think about.
Maybe being ready doesn’t always mean feeling confident. Maybe sometimes being ready means being willing to trust God while we are still nervous, uncertain, and asking questions.
Yesterday, we talked about using what has already been placed in our hands. Today, we’re reminded that sometimes God asks us to step beyond what we believe we can do.
Both require faith.
One says, “Use what you’ve been given.”
The other says, “Trust Me with what comes next.”
And perhaps that’s a fitting way to close September.
We don’t have to have every answer before we begin. We don’t have to feel completely prepared. We don’t have to know exactly how everything will work out.
We simply have to remain willing to listen when God calls and courageous enough to take the next step.
Pause and Pray
Father, thank You for knowing me completely and still calling me to grow.
When I focus on what I lack, remind me of Your presence. When fear tells me I’m not ready, give me the courage to take the next step. Help me recognize the difference between wisdom that tells me to prepare and fear that tells me to never begin.
If You are calling me toward something, give me the faith to trust You one step at a time.
Amen.
September has given us many lessons, but perhaps this is one worth carrying forward:
You may not feel ready, but that doesn’t mean you aren’t being prepared.
I’ll see you in October for another 15 Minutes with God.
