Good morning from Colorado, where the peaks are tall and the path is wide! Today is Monday, May 4th, and my faith is secured in Christ Jesus! Thanks for stopping by my blog as we continue this special week of looking back to move forward.
I’ll be honest: writing this series is proving to be the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I’ve tucked these memories so far back to avoid the sting of loss that bringing them into the light feels like an internal wrestling match. But today, memory lane has led me to a four-wheeled passion of my brother’s: his skateboard.
As a faith blogger, I’m realizing that my brother and I shared a specific “place in line.” We were the youngest, often falling victim to the reality that resources were stretched thin by the time they reached us. We always saw our mother, Glomae, as the ultimate hero—and she was—but she only had so much to give. Today, I have to give a newfound respect to my father, Harrison. While Glomae provided the survival, Harrison became our “Knight in Shining Armor” for the joy. If memory serves, he was the one who made sure Butch had that skateboard, just as he provided our bikes and outdoor toys.
That skateboard represented a “no-fear” freedom, but for me, it just made him harder to catch! Butch would put miles behind him on those wheels, chasing down friends in every direction while I was putting miles behind me growing in grace. I started to realize that his “disobedience” regarding the “come home after school” rule wasn’t about defiance; it was about a spirit that was too big to be fenced in. He was rolling toward a life that was bigger than our driveway, and I was learning that being his sister meant giving him the room to fly.
The Takeaway for Us
- The Unsung Hero: One realizes that family dynamics are rarely one-sided. While one parent provides the foundation, the other may provide the “wings.” Acknowledging the “Knight in Shining Armor” doesn’t diminish the hero who stayed in the trenches; it simply completes the historical record.
- The Freedom of the Youngest: There is a unique bond between the “tail-end” siblings who navigate the leftovers together. That shared experience creates a resilient brand of sibling love that understands the value of a gift like a skateboard.
- Miles of Growth: While one person is putting miles behind them physically, another is often putting miles behind them spiritually. Both journeys are necessary to become the people God intended them to be.
Community Challenge
Is there a “Harrison” in your life—someone you overlooked while focusing on a different hero? This week, take a moment to look at your childhood through a historian’s lens. Who provided the “joy” when things were tight? How can you honor that contribution today?
Scripture & Prayer
- Scripture: “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights…” — James 1:17 (KJV)
- Prayer: Father, we thank You for the different roles parents play in our lives. We thank You for the “Knights in Shining Armor” who provided the toys, the laughter, and the skateboards. Help us to see our history with fresh eyes and to appreciate the hands that gave, even when we didn’t realize it at the time. Amen.
The Spiritual Seal
Remember: A gift is never just an object; it is an investment in a spirit. Whether it’s a skateboard or a word of encouragement, what is given in love travels further than the eye can see. Your past isn’t a place of lack; it’s a storehouse of grace. See you tomorrow!
