“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” — 2 Corinthians 5:17

I have always loved the title of the 2003 television movie Love Comes Softly. Based on Janette Oke’s novel and directed by Michael Landon Jr., it depicts a love that doesn’t arrive with a shout, but with a gentle, persistent nudge. That movie is so powerful because it reminds me of the most significant “edit” in my own life: the moment my heart shifted from the bitterness of racism to actually celebrating my father-in-law.

Shifting a heart to align with God’s heart usually happens just like that title—it comes softly, often disguised as a love you didn’t think you were capable of. For me, it was the ultimate proof that once you claim Christ as your Lord and Savior, the “old you” is officially off the clock. There is no going back to the person who let heritage or hate draw the lines.

This doesn’t mean the struggle disappears. We still reside in this flesh, and the old habits of thought may try to knock on the door. But as a new creation, the Holy Spirit is “always on duty”. He is that quiet, ever-present conviction that sounds the alarm when our thoughts don’t align with our walk of faith. He is the editor-in-chief of our souls, constantly refining our story until it looks less like us and more like Christ.

Spiritual Quote

“The Holy Spirit does not just give us a new life; He gives us a new way of seeing.” — Unknown

A Prayer for the Unnecessary Struggle

Father, we thank You that Your Spirit is always on duty. Forgive us for the energy we waste fighting battles You have already won. We confess that we often make our walk harder by clinging to old thoughts and “old versions” of ourselves that You have already edited out. Stop us from struggling to be who we used to be. When our prayers feel unanswered, remind us that perhaps the delay is simply You working “softly” on our hearts to prepare us for the gift. Let us yield to Your conviction and find peace in our new identity. Amen.

The Takeaway

You don’t have to “try” to be new; you just have to “yield” to the One who is already making you new. The Holy Spirit’s conviction isn’t a punishment—it’s an invitation to a better version of your story.

I’m Annette

Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

This is a space for the ‘unspoken’ stories. As a Black woman who has journeyed through childhood trauma and family alienation to find healing in God’s grace, I know what it’s like to feel lost in the shadows.

But I also know the light on the other side. Today, my life is a testimony of prayer, the joy of a second chance in marriage, and the strength of a heart reclaimed by faith. Whether you are healing from the past, navigating a diverse family, or deepening your walk with God—you are not alone. Let’s walk this path together.
