Good morning from Colorado! Today we’re going to do something a little different with our 15 Minutes with God. We’re going to dip our toes into a mini Bible study. Nothing complicated. No long theological lesson. Just a Scripture, a little time to sit with what Jesus is teaching, and a few questions for us to answer honestly.
Let’s Read the Scripture
Matthew 25:14–30 — The Parable of the Talents
Jesus tells the story of a man who leaves on a journey and entrusts his servants with his possessions. He gives one servant five talents, another two, and another one. When he returns, the first two servants have put what they were given to work and have gained more. But the servant who received one talent buried it in the ground because he was afraid. When the master returned, that servant had nothing more to show for what had been entrusted to him.
At first glance, this may sound like a story about money. But when I sit with it, I see something much bigger. Each servant was given something, but they weren’t given the same amount. What mattered was what they did with what had been placed in their hands. The servant with one talent wasn’t condemned because he had less. He was held accountable because he did nothing with what he had.
That makes me stop and think.
How often do we look at what someone else has and decide our own isn’t enough to get started?
Maybe we think we need more money, more education, more connections, more experience, more time, or a better opportunity. Meanwhile, something valuable may already be sitting in our hands.
Perhaps the question isn’t “What do I wish God had given me?”
Perhaps the better question is “What am I doing with what He already gave me?”
Questions to Consider
1. What has God placed in my hands?
Think beyond money. Consider your abilities, experiences, relationships, knowledge, creativity, time, resources, opportunities, and even the difficult things you’ve survived. What do you already possess that could be used for something meaningful?
2. Am I comparing what I have with what someone else has?
The servants didn’t receive equal amounts. Yet each was responsible for what had been entrusted to them. Have you allowed comparison to make what you have seem insignificant?
3. Is fear keeping me from using something God has given me?
The servant with one talent buried it because he was afraid. Is there something you’re avoiding because you’re afraid you’ll fail, be criticized, lose something, or discover that you’re not as prepared as you thought?
4. What could I do with what I already have?
Instead of waiting for the perfect opportunity, what small step could you take with the resources already available to you?
5. If God asked me today, “What did you do with what I gave you?” what would I say?
Don’t rush past this question. Sit with it. Let your answer be honest.
The Lesson
For me, the lesson isn’t that everyone is supposed to produce the same results. It’s that God knows what He has entrusted to each of us, and comparison doesn’t change our responsibility.
We may not have five talents. We may not even have two.
But if we’ve been given one, there is still something we can do with it.
Sometimes we spend so much time wishing for what we don’t have that we overlook the possibility sitting right in front of us.
Maybe today isn’t about asking God for more.
Maybe today is about asking Him to show us what we haven’t recognized in what we already have.
Pause and Pray
Father, help me see what You have already placed in my hands. Keep me from comparing my life, my abilities, or my opportunities with someone else’s. Give me courage where fear has caused me to hold back, and wisdom to use what You have entrusted to me.
Show me what I can do with what I already have.
Amen.
Take a few more minutes today and sit with those five questions. You may discover that you have been asking God for something you’ve already been given.
