Good morning from Colorado!
Some words people say to us stay with us for years. Sometimes they encourage us, but sometimes they do the opposite. They become seeds of fear that quietly grow until we begin to believe what was said about us.
I know this because some of the words that hurt me the most came from my own father. He told me I would never be much because I was Black, a woman, and didn’t know the King’s English. Sadly, he seemed proud when he said those things. What he didn’t know was how deeply those words tore at my soul.
Those words affected me in ways I didn’t fully understand then. They made me afraid to ask questions, afraid of being wrong, and sometimes afraid to even try. Looking back, I realize that fear had convinced me that perhaps I wasn’t smart enough.
But somewhere along the way, I had to make a choice. Would I continue believing the words that had been spoken over me, or would I begin to believe that God had something different for my life?
Finding faith over fear wasn’t something that happened overnight. It was a process of learning that another person’s opinion of me did not have to become my opinion of myself.
Maybe you’ve had someone speak words over your life that made you question your worth, your ability, or your future. Perhaps those words came from a parent, teacher, spouse, friend, employer, or even yourself.
Today, I want you to consider this: Whose voice has been louder in your life—the voice that told you who you couldn’t be, or the God who knows who you are?
Fear may have introduced itself through someone else’s words, but it doesn’t have to write the rest of your story.
Sometimes faith begins when we finally decide to listen to a different voice.
I’ll see you tomorrow for another 15 Minutes with God.
