Don’t Be a Fool with Your Finances: Lessons from a Single Mom’s Journey to Provisions

Good morning from beautiful Colorado! Here, where the peaks are tall and majestic, I am reminded of the strength we find when we are secured in Christ. No matter how thin the air or the budget gets, His grace is always sufficient.

Today is April Fool’s Day, a day when the world loves to play pranks and make people feel small for what they don’t know. But when it comes to providing for your loved ones, there is no room for feeling like a fool.

As I’ve gotten older, I find myself returning to the roots I planted years ago as a young single mother. Back then, I was navigating life on a single income with a child in tow, and frankly, I wasn’t prepared for either. My oldest was a bottomless pit; he’d eat everything in sight, often finishing his brother’s meal and leaving me with another hungry child to feed. To manage, I started feeding the kids first, letting them eat their fill before I’d have whatever was left—if there was anything at all.

Because I always made just a dollar too much to qualify for food stamps, I had to teach myself how to provide. I didn’t have a teacher, but I believe God saw my heart and led the way. I learned to hunt for clearance meats to freeze and mastered making “stretch” meals that could feed us for days. Even simple things, like learning to make pancakes from scratch, became staples for our weekend breakfasts.

The world might call those days a struggle, but those were the days I learned to be a provider. Today, as so many people face that same “lack,” I realize those lessons weren’t just for then—they were for now. You aren’t a fool for shopping the clearance rack or making a meal last; you are a steward of what God has given you.

Takeaway for Us

  • True provision isn’t about how much you have, but how you use what God provides. We must stop comparing our “pantry” to the world’s standards. Being “secured in Christ” means trusting that even when the budget is tight, His wisdom can teach us to make a dollar stretch and a meal satisfy.

Community Challenge

This week, I challenge you to “Master the Scratch.” Find one staple item you usually buy pre-made (like bread, pancakes, or soup) and learn to make it from scratch. Share your progress or a photo of your “stretch meal” in the comments!

Scripture

  • “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19

A Prayer for Provisions

  • Heavenly Father, we thank You for being our Great Provider. We lift up every person feeling the weight of “lack” today. Wash away the spirit of foolishness or shame that comes from financial struggle. Grant us the wisdom to manage our resources, the creativity to stretch our meals, and the peace that only comes from being secured in You. Amen.

I’ll admit, I didn’t originally have a post scheduled for today! But after visiting a fellow blogger’s page and joining a wonderful discussion on how to make meals stretch, I realized those thoughts were too important not to share here.

That conversation reminded me of my own journey, and I felt it was the perfect time to open up about that chapter of my life. My hope is that these lessons on resourcefulness are both encouraging and insightful for anyone looking to make the most of what they have.

I’d love to hear from you—what is one ‘secret’ way you make your resources or meals stretch further? Let’s learn from each other in the comments below!

I’m Annette

Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

This is a space for the ‘unspoken’ stories. As a Black woman who has journeyed through childhood trauma and family alienation to find healing in God’s grace, I know what it’s like to feel lost in the shadows.

But I also know the light on the other side. Today, my life is a testimony of prayer, the joy of a second chance in marriage, and the strength of a heart reclaimed by faith. Whether you are healing from the past, navigating a diverse family, or deepening your walk with God—you are not alone. Let’s walk this path together.
