The Sunday Sanctuary: Silent Mice and Disney Dreams

Good morning from Colorado, where the peaks are tall and the tomb is empty! Today is Monday, and my faith is secured in Christ Jesus! Thanks for stopping by my blog, where we discuss life, faith, and the long walk toward healing.

On Sundays, the heavy silence of our week became our sanctuary. I remember my brother and me sitting at the kitchen table, as quiet as a church mouse. Our little eyes were glued to the television for hours watching The Wonderful World of Disney and Mutual of Omaha. In those moments, the blurry reality of people moving in and out of our home disappeared. We were transported to worlds that were healthy, adventurous, and totally abnormal compared to what we were living in real-time.

I don’t remember a single adult in the room. Perhaps my mom was in her bedroom, finally catching a moment of rest from her 16-hour workdays, and the television became a skilled babysitter. We were untrained and uninformed about the world, but those shows were making an impression and a profound impact on our little lives. They gave us a glimpse of a “Kingdom” where things worked out, keeping us company until our mother was rested and the house felt full again.

The Takeaway for Us

  • The Gift of Focus: When life is blurry, the child often finds a “window” to focus on. These windows are the tools God uses to protect a growing mind from a heavy environment.
  • Grace in the Gap: Recognizing that a skilled babysitter stood in the gap while a mother rested helps shift the story from neglect to a family’s desperate need for a sanctuary they could afford.

Community Challenge

Do you have a “Sunday memory” of a safe place you created when the adults in your life were exhausted? How did those early “escapes” help sharpen your vision in a blurry world?

Scripture & Prayer

  • Scripture: “But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 19:14 (KJV)
  • Prayer: Father, we thank You for the “Sunday Sanctuaries” provided for children in need of escape. Thank You for protecting their minds and giving them glimpses of a bigger world. Heal the lonely places in their history and remind them that You were the silent Guest at their kitchen table. Amen.

I’m Annette

Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

This is a space for the ‘unspoken’ stories. As a Black woman who has journeyed through childhood trauma and family alienation to find healing in God’s grace, I know what it’s like to feel lost in the shadows.

But I also know the light on the other side. Today, my life is a testimony of prayer, the joy of a second chance in marriage, and the strength of a heart reclaimed by faith. Whether you are healing from the past, navigating a diverse family, or deepening your walk with God—you are not alone. Let’s walk this path together.
