Good day from Colorado, where we have blue skies nearly 365 days of the year! Thanks for stopping by my blog, where we discuss life, faith, and the sometimes bumpy walk with Christ.
When your hands are “too small to carry a world so BIG,” your spirit finds ways to escape. By the time I was twelve, I had lived the life of a forty-year-old woman. I was a Little Shepherd to my brother, a latch-key kid, and a witness to the “fuzzy” rotation of people moving in and out of our home. I was carrying the weight of my mother’s 16-hour Gethsemane on my own narrow shoulders.
My response to the pressure was sleep. I would come home from school and go straight to bed, sleeping until the next morning. I would wake up, go to school, come home, and repeat. It wasn’t laziness; it was a soul-deep exhaustion. My mom never noticed because she was always at the forge, working to keep us fed. While she was battling for our survival in the world, I was battling for my peace in my dreams.
People might look at a child who sleeps all day and call it a “lack of discipline,” but God sees a heart that is trying to find the “Rest” He promised. In the Bible, even the prophet Elijah had to sleep under a broom bush when the weight of the world became too much. If you find yourself hiding in sleep to escape the “fuzziness” of your reality, know that God isn’t judging your exhaustion. He is the one who watches over you while you rest, preparing you to rise for the next chapter.
The Takeaway for Us
- The Soul’s Sanctuary: Sleep is often a child’s only way to set a boundary against a world that is asking too much of them.
- Rest is Not a Sin: You do not have to feel guilty for the years you spent “hiding.” It was a survival strategy for a heart that was under fire.
- God Watches While You Sleep: Even when the adults in your life don’t notice your exhaustion, the Savior who never slumbers or sleeps is guarding your peace.
Community Challenge
Have you ever looked back and realized you were “checked out” or sleeping through a season because the reality was too heavy to carry? How do you give yourself permission to rest today without the guilt of the “work-day” cycle?
Scripture & Prayer
- Scripture: “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” — Psalm 4:8 (NIV)
- Prayer: Father, I thank You for the seasons where You allowed me to find sanctuary in rest. I ask for healing for the “Twelve-Year-Old Me” who was too tired to stay awake. Thank You for being the Guard at my door when I was too small to protect myself. I receive Your peace today. Amen.
The Spiritual Seal
Remember: You are not defined by the years the locusts have eaten, but by the new thing God is doing in your life today. The tomb is empty, and your story is rising. See you Friday!
