Good day from Colorado, where we have blue skies nearly 365 days of the year! Thanks for stopping by my blog, where we discuss life, faith, and the sometimes bumpy walk with Christ.
When you are a child living in a house where people are constantly moving in and out, life feels fuzzy and unsafe. My mother tried to rely on others so she could work her 16-hour shifts, but my brother and I often faced neglect or abuse instead. I remember clearly when her first cousin from Illinois moved in with us. She brought along a man who felt distant, yet his presence was everywhere in our small world.
One weekend, my mom left us in her care. She decided to throw a party in the basement and forced my brother and me to clean up the aftermath. My 7-year-old brother brought up a melting bag of ice, and water was everywhere. When our cousin started walking down those stairs, she slipped and slid all the way to the bottom, breaking her leg. As a child who had been mistreated, I felt her injury was “deserved.” Unlike my desire to fix my mom’s problems with a magic wand, my childish heart felt like God had finally stepped in and handed down a quick dose of justice.
But God had a “resurrection” plan hidden in that broken leg. That cousin eventually became my very best friend, and though she has since passed on, I miss her truly. She bonded with me in a way that saved my future; she was the one who helped me navigate the traps of being a single parent so I wouldn’t end up exhausted by the same “16-hour workday” cycle that had consumed my mother. God used a “slip and fall” to build a bridge for me. You might be looking at a “broken” situation today, but don’t count it as a loss yet. Sometimes God allows a fall just so He can set a life on a brand-new path.
The Takeaway for Us
- Deliverance in Disguise: Sometimes the “break” in your life is actually God stopping a cycle of “neglect.”
- The Unlikely Guide: God can turn a “critic” or an “abuser” into a “saving grace” through a divine encounter.
- Your History is a Map: Looking back as a family historian, you can see that the “fuzziness” of the past was actually God’s hand moving the pieces to protect you.
Community Challenge
Have you ever had a “bad” situation turn into a lifelong blessing or a “saving grace” friendship? How do you find the grace to forgive the “broken steps” of your past so you can walk into your future?
Scripture & Prayer
- Scripture: “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” — Genesis 50:20 (NIV)
- Prayer: Father, I thank You for the “broken stairs” in my life that led to beautiful bonds. Thank You for the woman who became my friend and guide when I was just a girl. I ask for healing for the “Little Me” who felt neglected, and I thank You for the deliverance You provided through unlikely places. Amen.
The Spiritual Seal
Remember: You are not defined by the years the locusts have eaten, but by the new thing God is doing in your life today. The tomb is empty, and your story is rising. See you Thursday!
