The “Know-It-All” Spirit: When Your History Meets His Mercy

Hello from Colorado! I am so glad you’ve stopped by the blog today. Grab a seat, and let’s dive into the Word together.

Have you ever dealt with a sideline critic who thinks they have a master’s degree in your mistakes? People with a “know-it-all” spirit love to bring up your “five husbands”—the failed projects, the past stumbles, or the seasons where you were just trying to survive. They use your history as a weapon to keep you from your destiny.

In John 4, Jesus looked the woman in the eyes and told her exactly who she had been. He said, “The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true” (John 4:18, NIV). To a sideline ear, this sounds like an exposure. But to the woman, it was an invitation. She realized that if He knew everything she had done and was still offering her Living Water, then the opinions of the town square no longer carried any weight.

The “know-it-all” spirit wants you to be “uncomfortable in your own skin” so you will stop building your dreams. They want you to think you are “dumb” for believing God can use someone with your track record. But the Messiah doesn’t bring up your past to shame you; He brings it up to deliver you from the power it has over you. When the Messiah knows your truth, the “facts” the sidelines are whispering lose their sting.

The Takeaway for Us

  • Exposure vs. Encounter: When a critic brings up your past, they want to bury you. When the Messiah brings it up, He wants to build you.
  • The Power of Truth: You don’t have to hide from your history. Once it is covered by His mercy, it becomes part of your “net-breaking” testimony.
  • Silence the Sidelines: If the Messiah isn’t pointing a finger at youyou don’t have to listen to the people who are.

Community Challenge

Why do we sometimes believe the “know-it-all” spirits on the sidelines more than we believe the Word of God? How do you keep your head high when people try to use your “yesterday” to stop your “tomorrow”?

Scripture & Prayer

  • Scripture: “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet.” — John 4:19 (NIV) (She didn’t run away in shame; she leaned into the Truth!)
  • Prayer: Father, I thank You that You know my whole story and You still chose me. I silence the “know-it-all” spirits who try to use my past to shake my foundation. Give me the boldness of the woman at the well to stay in the conversation with You until my deliverance is complete. Amen.

I’m Annette

Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.

This is a space for the ‘unspoken’ stories. As a Black woman who has journeyed through childhood trauma and family alienation to find healing in God’s grace, I know what it’s like to feel lost in the shadows.

But I also know the light on the other side. Today, my life is a testimony of prayer, the joy of a second chance in marriage, and the strength of a heart reclaimed by faith. Whether you are healing from the past, navigating a diverse family, or deepening your walk with God—you are not alone. Let’s walk this path together.
